Flesh for Frankenstein (1973). Film still via The Criterion Channel.

Clinical Overview

Dr. Frankenstein, preoccupied with his experiments, leaves the child-rearing to his wife—who is also his sister. Out of this corruption comes another moral abomination: a man and woman resurrected from pilfered body parts.

Diagnosis

A comparatively level-headed servant serves as the moral center, but the film indulges too readily into queasy gore porn.

Prescription

A remake makes the incest a surprise—and a motif. It could turn out that the monsters are also siblings. And the children can’t resist playing doctor themselves. Yet, Dr. Frankenstein should be convinced, always, of his moral superiority. This is a way to justify the horror.
